Maryland HVAC Contractor License

HVAC contractors performing residential work in Maryland must hold a license through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC). Maryland does not have a separate state HVAC licensing board — HVAC residential work requires the standard MHIC license.

Requirements

  • MHIC License: Must hold an active MHIC home improvement license
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance
  • EPA Certification: Section 608 certification recommended for refrigerant handling
  • Application Fee: $403.75 (includes $281.25 application fee + $100 Guaranty Fund contribution + $22.50 processing)

Renewal Information

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $456.25 (includes $281.25 application fee + $175 Guaranty Fund assessment)
  • No CE Required: Maryland does not mandate continuing education for HVAC contractors through MHIC

Scope of Work

Licensed HVAC contractors can install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in residential properties throughout Maryland.

Licensing Structure

Unlike electrical and plumbing, HVAC in Maryland falls under the MHIC umbrella rather than having its own dedicated licensing board. There is no separate HVAC contractor license in Maryland — HVAC residential work is covered by the standard MHIC home improvement contractor license. Commercial HVAC work may have additional requirements depending on the jurisdiction.
