Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Maryland Fire Protection Contractor License
The State Fire Marshal licenses fire sprinkler contractors — firms that install, inspect, test, maintain, and repair fire sprinkler systems in residential and commercial buildings under COMAR 29.06.05. The license is required statewide before performing any covered sprinkler work.
Application Fee $300 — Renewal $200
The initial application fee is $300. The biennial renewal fee is $200. If you miss the renewal deadline, a $300 late fee applies on top of the renewal amount per COMAR 29.06.05.04, making a lapsed renewal more expensive than renewing on time.
NICET Certification Required — At Least Level II
Every licensed fire sprinkler contractor must employ at least one designated qualified individual holding a current NICET Level II (or higher) certification in fire protection for water-based systems. Some license classes require NICET Level III or higher. Maryland does not administer a separate CE program for this license — NICET credential maintenance is managed through NICET directly.
Insurance — $1 Million Combined Single Limit
The State Fire Marshal requires general liability coverage of at least $1,000,000 combined single limit bodily injury, death, and property damage, plus products and completed operations coverage per COMAR 29.06.05.04.
Licensed to Lay Out, Install, and Maintain NFPA 13/13D/13R Systems Statewide
A licensed firm can lay out, install, inspect, test, maintain, and repair fire sprinkler systems designed to NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, and NFPA 13R throughout Maryland.
