Maryland Home Improvement Contractor License
The Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) licenses contractors performing residential improvement work in the state. This is the primary contractor license for residential construction in Maryland.
Requirements
- Guaranty Fund: Contribution to the MHIC Guaranty Fund required
- Insurance: General liability insurance
- Business Registration: Must be registered with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation
- Application Fee: $403.75 (includes $281.25 application fee + $100 Guaranty Fund contribution + $22.50 processing)

Scope of Work
MHIC-licensed contractors can perform residential construction, renovation, repair, and improvement work. This includes additions, kitchens, bathrooms, roofing, siding, windows, and other residential modifications.
Consumer Protection
The MHIC Guaranty Fund provides a consumer protection mechanism. Homeowners can file claims against the fund if a licensed contractor fails to perform contracted work or performs defective work.
Subcontractor Requirements
All subcontractors performing home improvement work in Maryland must also hold an MHIC license, not just the general contractor.
