Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Maryland Elevator Contractor License
The Maryland Elevator Safety Review Board at the Maryland Department of Labor licenses contractors who install, service, and repair elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and other conveyance equipment throughout Maryland. A contractor license is required before any firm can perform this work statewide.
Initial License Fee $300 — Renewal $300
To obtain a contractor license, pay a $25 non-refundable application processing fee plus a $275 two-year initial license fee — $300 total to get started. The biennial renewal is also $300. Apply at the Maryland Department of Labor elevator application page; renewals use the elevator contractor renewal affidavit.
Five Years of Industry Experience Required
Applicants must document at least five years of work experience in the elevator industry — in construction, maintenance, service, or repair — per Maryland Department of Labor licensing requirements.
ASME A17.1 Safety Code Governs All Work
Every elevator installation and major repair in Maryland must comply with the ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and all subsequent amendments as adopted by the state. Licensed contractors are accountable for meeting the current adopted edition on every project.
Statewide License, Broad Equipment Coverage
A licensed elevator contractor can install, maintain, repair, and alter elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and other conveyance equipment at any site in Maryland.
