Maryland Home Builder License


The Maryland Office of the Attorney General - Home Builder Registration Unit registers home builders who construct new residential dwellings. Home builder registration in Maryland is administered by the AG's office, not MHIC.


Requirements


  • AG Registration: Must register with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General
  • New Home Warranty: Must provide new home warranty coverage
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance
  • Application Fee: $800

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $400–$1,200 (tiered by permit count: $400 for 10 or fewer permits, $800 for 11–74 permits, $1,200 for 75 or more permits)
  • No CE Required: Maryland does not mandate continuing education

Scope of Work


Registered home builders can construct new residential dwellings including single-family homes, townhouses, and condominiums. This includes all aspects of new construction from foundation to finish.


New Home Warranty


Maryland requires home builders to provide a new home warranty covering structural defects, systems, and workmanship for specified periods. This is a key consumer protection requirement.
