Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Iowa HVAC Service Technician Specialty License
The Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board (PMSB) issues the HVAC Service Technician Specialty license for technicians who perform service, maintenance, and repair work on existing HVAC systems. This is a focused license for service technicians rather than full installation work.
What This License Authorizes
HVAC Service Technicians may perform service, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This license does not authorize new installations or major alterations — those require a full HVAC-Refrigeration Journeyperson or Master license.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must demonstrate relevant HVAC service experience
- Must pass the HVAC Service Technician examination
Application and Fees
The $50 application fee covers the three-year license period. Paper applications incur an additional $25 processing fee. Allow four to six weeks for processing.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 3 years (next expiration: June 30, 2029)
- Renewal Fee: $50
- Continuing Education: 8 hours of classroom instruction required per three-year licensing term
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing HVAC service work without proper licensure violates Iowa Code Chapter 105. The PMSB may impose administrative penalties, issue cease-and-desist orders, and initiate proceedings against violators.
