Iowa Class A Master Electrician License
Iowa's Class A Master Electrician license is the state's highest electrical credential, authorizing the holder to perform and supervise all types of electrical work and serve as the master of record for a licensed electrical contracting business. The Iowa Electrical Examining Board issues the license under Iowa Code Chapter 103 for a three-year term at $375.
What This License Authorizes
Class A Master Electricians may perform and supervise electrical installations, alterations, and repairs on residential, commercial, and industrial properties without restriction. An electrical contractor that holds or employs an active Class A Master Electrician may contract for electrical work throughout Iowa — the master of record takes responsibility for the quality and code compliance of all work the contracting entity performs.
How to Qualify
To apply you must:
- Hold an active Class A or Class B Journeyman Electrician license
- Have at least one year of licensed journeyman experience acceptable to the board
- Pass the board's examination with a score of 70 or higher within 24 months of application; the exam covers the most recently adopted National Electrical Code and electrical theory
Fees and Renewal
- Application fee: $375 per three-year term (prorated by month for mid-cycle issuance)
- Renewal fee: $375 every 3 years
- Continuing education: 18 contact hours per renewal cycle — at least 6 hours must cover the National Electrical Code; the remaining 12 hours may include circuit theory, blueprint reading, transformer and motor theory, control systems, or other board-approved electrical topics
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without proper licensure violates Iowa Code Chapter 103. The Iowa Electrical Examining Board may impose administrative penalties, issue cease-and-desist orders, and pursue civil penalties against violators.
