Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Iowa Electrical Contractor License
The Iowa Electrical Examining Board issues the Electrical Contractor license to businesses that perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs in the state. Electrical contractors must hold or employ a person who holds an active Master Electrician license and be registered as a contractor with DIAL.
What This License Authorizes
An Electrical Contractor license authorizes the holder to contract for and perform electrical work throughout Iowa, including residential, commercial, and industrial installations. The contractor must have a licensed Master Electrician responsible for supervising all electrical work.
Insurance Requirements
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $1,000,000 coverage for all work performed
- Workers' Compensation: Required if the contractor has employees
Application Process
The $375 application fee covers the three-year license period. Applicants must demonstrate they hold or employ someone with an active Master Electrician license and maintain current contractor registration with DIAL. All exams are administered by PSI on behalf of the Electrical Examining Board.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 3 years
- Renewal Fee: $375
- Continuing Education: 18 hours required per renewal cycle, including a minimum of 6 hours on the National Electrical Code (NEC) and 12 hours of related electrical installation technique
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid license violates Iowa Code Chapter 103. Violators face administrative penalties, cease-and-desist orders, and potential fines. Unlicensed electrical work creates significant safety and liability exposure.
