Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Iowa Electrical Contractor License
Iowa Code Chapter 103 requires a separate Electrical Contractor license from the Iowa Electrical Examining Board for any business that contracts for electrical installations, alterations, or repairs — whether residential, commercial, or industrial. A Chapter 91C contractor registration with DIAL is also required and its number must appear on every renewal filing.
What This License Authorizes
An Electrical Contractor license covers all electrical work types in Iowa: new installations, service upgrades, remodels, and repairs on any property type. The business must be or employ an active Class A or Class B Master Electrician who takes code responsibility for every project. Class B masters carry geographic and work-type restrictions in political subdivisions — whether before or after January 1, 2008 — that have established licensing standards limiting their work.
License Fee, Renewal, and CE
- Fee: $375 per 3-year term ($125/year); same amount applies to renewal
- Renewal cycle: every three years; all Iowa electrician licenses expire December 31
- Late renewal: 10% of the renewal fee per month after December 31. The board closes the renewal window on March 31 — holders who miss that deadline must apply for a new license
- Continuing education: 18 contact hours per cycle — minimum 6 hours on the National Electrical Code, 12 hours of related electrical installation topics. Hours are prorated for new licensees: 12 hours if issued in 2026, 6 hours if issued in 2027
Insurance Requirements
The carrier must notify the Iowa Electrical Examining Board at least 30 days before canceling or reducing coverage. A contractor whose insurance lapses must stop taking electrical work immediately.
- General liability: $1,000,000 minimum, covering general and completed operations
- Workers' compensation: required if the contractor has employees
Penalties for Unlicensed Contracting
The board may impose a civil penalty of up to $1,000 per day for unlicensed electrical contracting — each day of continued violation is a separate offense under Iowa Code §103.39. The board may also seek a permanent injunction (§103.37) and refer cases to the attorney general.
