Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician License
Class A Journeyman Electricians in Iowa may perform electrical work on residential, commercial, and industrial properties — the Class A license carries no site-type restriction. The Iowa Electrical Examining Board issues this license under Iowa Code Chapter 103 for a three-year term at $75.
What This License Authorizes
A Class A Journeyman license covers electrical installations, alterations, and repairs on all property types. When working for a licensed electrical contractor, you operate under the general supervision of a master electrician. The Class A designation is the broader credential; a Class B journeyman license is limited to work in certain political subdivisions.
How to Qualify
Applicants must complete one of two paths:
- Registered apprenticeship — complete a training program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship
- Equivalent training or experience — demonstrate training and experience that satisfies criteria established by the board
Both paths require passing the board's examination, which covers the most recently adopted National Electrical Code and electrical theory.
Fees and Renewal
- Application fee: $75 per three-year term (prorated by month for mid-cycle issuance)
- Renewal fee: $75 every 3 years
- Continuing education: 18 contact hours per renewal cycle — at least 6 hours must cover the National Electrical Code; the remaining 12 hours may include circuit theory, blueprint reading, transformer and motor theory, control systems, or other board-approved electrical topics
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Working as an electrician without a valid license violates Iowa Code Chapter 103. The Iowa Electrical Examining Board may impose administrative penalties, issue cease-and-desist orders, and pursue civil penalties against violators.
