Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician License
The Iowa Electrical Examining Board issues the Class A Journeyman Electrician license to qualified electricians who have completed an approved apprenticeship program and passed the state examination. This license authorizes the holder to perform electrical work on residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
What This License Authorizes
Class A Journeyman Electricians may perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs on all property types — residential, commercial, and industrial. They work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician when employed by a licensed electrical contractor.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED
- Must complete an apprenticeship training program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (typically 4 years)
- Must pass the Iowa Journeyman Electrician examination (PSI) with a score of 70 or higher
Application and Fees
The $75 application fee covers the three-year license period. Submit a completed application with proof of apprenticeship completion and passing exam results.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 3 years
- Renewal Fee: $75
- Continuing Education: 18 hours required per cycle — minimum 6 hours on the National Electrical Code (NEC) and 12 hours of related electrical installation technique
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without proper licensure violates Iowa Code Chapter 103 and may result in administrative penalties, cease-and-desist orders, and fines.
