Iowa Residential Electrician License
The Iowa Electrical Examining Board issues the Residential Electrician license for electricians who perform electrical work exclusively on residential properties. This is a focused license category for those specializing in home electrical systems.
What This License Authorizes
Residential Electricians may perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs on single-family and multi-family residential structures. This license does not authorize work on commercial or industrial properties.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED
- Must complete an approved apprenticeship or equivalent training program
- Must pass the Iowa Residential Electrician examination administered by PSI
- Must verify U.S. citizenship or lawful presence through SAVE
Application and Fees
The $75 application fee covers the three-year license period. Applicants submit documentation of training, experience, and passing exam scores.

- Continuing Education: 18 hours required per renewal cycle, including 6 hours on the NEC and 12 hours of related electrical installation technique
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing residential electrical work without a valid license violates Iowa Code Chapter 103 and may result in administrative penalties, cease-and-desist orders, and fines.
