Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Iowa Master Plumber License
The Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board (PMSB) issues the Master Plumber license, the highest level of plumbing licensure in the state. A Master Plumber may serve as the master of record for a plumbing contracting business, taking responsibility for the design, installation, and repair of plumbing systems.
What This License Authorizes
Master Plumbers are authorized to design, install, alter, and repair plumbing systems. They may serve as the required master of record for a Plumbing Contractor license, overseeing all plumbing work performed by the contracting entity. A master may only serve as master of record for one contractor at a time in any particular discipline.
Requirements
- Must hold a Journeyperson Plumber license with at least two years of work experience, OR hold a master plumber license in another jurisdiction
- Must pass the Iowa Master Plumber examination with a passing score
- Must be at least 18 years old
Application and Fees
The $240 application fee covers the three-year license period. Paper applications incur an additional $25 processing fee. A 30% multi-license discount is available when purchasing multiple active licenses on the same day.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 3 years (next expiration: June 30, 2029)
- Renewal Fee: $240
- Continuing Education: 8 hours of classroom instruction required per three-year licensing term
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing plumbing work at the master level without proper licensure violates Iowa Code Chapter 105. The PMSB may impose administrative penalties, issue cease-and-desist orders, and initiate proceedings against violators.
