Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

  1. 1

Make sure the bond still clears

The $10,000.00 bond requirement needs to stay active through the renewal.

  2. 2

    Check the insurance certificates

Make sure the required policies are current and match what the board or agency expects before you file.

  3. 3

    File with the board

File through Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors (TBLC) and pay the $200.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Renew online
  4. 4

    Leave room for processing

Typical processing time is 30 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $20.00, with a 30-day grace period.

Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Tennessee Home Improvement Contractor License

Tennessee requires a home improvement contractor license for residential projects valued under $25,000. This is a lower-tier license compared to the full TBLC contractor license.

Requirements

  • No Exam Required: Unlike the full contractor license, no examination is needed
  • Bond: $10,000 surety bond required
  • Insurance: General liability insurance required
  • Application Fee: $250

Renewal Information

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (biennial)
  • Renewal Fee: $200
  • Late Penalty: $20 per month within 30-day grace period
  • No Continuing Education: CE is not required for home improvement contractors

Scope of Work

Home improvement contractors can perform residential renovation, repair, and improvement work on projects valued under $25,000. Projects at or above $25,000 require a full TBLC contractor license.

Consumer Protection

The home improvement license provides consumer protections through the TBLC complaint and investigation process. Homeowners can file complaints against licensed contractors for substandard work.
