Tennessee Electrical Contractor License
TBLC licenses electrical work valued at $25,000 or more
The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors (TBLC) issues this license. Any electrical contracting project where the total cost — labor and materials — reaches $25,000 requires a valid TBLC license. Smaller residential projects may fall under the home improvement license instead.
Pass two exams before you apply
TBLC requires both the Tennessee Business & Law exam and the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Electrical contractors. Both exams can be scheduled through TBLC's approved testing providers. Neither exam can be substituted or waived.
Application requires financial documentation and insurance
The application fee is $250 (nonrefundable). TBLC requires proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance under T.C.A. § 62-6-111. On the financial side, contractors typically provide an audited financial statement supported by a parent-company Guaranty Agreement; applicants who cannot provide a Guaranty Agreement may submit a $500,000 Contractor's License Bond instead.
Renew biennially at $200 — with 8 hours of CE
The license renews every two years at $200. TBLC requires 8 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle for all BC-A Contractor license holders, including electrical. Submit your CE completion records when you renew through the TBLC online portal.
A 12-month grace window exists, but lapsing has criminal exposure
If you miss the renewal deadline, TBLC allows a 12-month grace period at $20/month in late fees — a maximum of $240 before the license lapses. Operating on projects of $25,000 or more without a valid license is a criminal offense under T.C.A. § 62-6-120. Verify current penalty exposure directly with TBLC or legal counsel.
