Tennessee Fire Sprinkler Contractor License

The State Fire Marshal's Office issues the Certificate of Registration — not TBLC

The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office (TDCI Division of Fire Prevention) licenses fire sprinkler contractors under Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-02-07. This is a Department of Commerce and Insurance function, separate from the TBLC contractor licensing program.

The certificate fee has two parts: $100 to apply, then an issuance fee when approved

File the application with the State Fire Marshal's Office at tn.gov/commerce/fire. The application fee is $100. If the certificate is approved, a separate issuance fee is due before the certificate is issued. Applications that are not acted on within 12 months expire and require refiling. See the State Fire Marshal's fee schedule for all current amounts.

Every certificated firm must designate a licensed RME with NICET Level III

The firm's Responsible Managing Employee (RME) must hold either a NICET Level III certification as a fire protection engineering technician — demonstrated by NICET's written confirmation letter — or a current Tennessee Professional Engineer or architect license. No continuing education is required for either the certificate or the RME license. RME application and renewal fees are listed in the State Fire Marshal's fee schedule.

Renew annually — certificate at $200

The Certificate of Registration renews annually at $200. The RME license carries a separate annual renewal fee. Submit all renewals to the State Fire Marshal's Office before the expiration date. For questions on late renewals and penalty provisions, contact the Permits and Licenses Unit directly.
