Rhode Island Water Filtration, Well Drilling, and Pump Installer License


The Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (RICRLB) issues licenses for Water Filtration Contractors, Well Drillers, and Pump Installers who work on water-supply systems throughout the state.


What This License Authorizes


This license authorizes contractors to engage in well drilling (including the installation, alteration, removal, or repair of water-supply systems), pump installation (installing pumps, controls, and associated equipment for water extraction and delivery), and water filtration system installation for residential, commercial, and municipal applications.


Application Requirements


  • PSI Exam: Applicants must pass a state-approved examination administered by PSI
  • Drilling Experience: Applicants must demonstrate relevant drilling or installation experience
  • License Fee: $200 for a 2-year license period
  • General Liability Insurance: Required, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees
  • Government-Issued ID: Driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $200
  • Late Fee: $50 for expired licenses
  • Continuing Education: 10 hours of Board-approved continuing education per renewal cycle

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing well drilling, pump installation, or water filtration work without a valid RICRLB license is a violation of Rhode Island General Laws and may result in administrative fines and criminal penalties.
