Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Rhode Island Commercial Roofing Contractor License
Commercial roofing work in Rhode Island requires a dedicated RICRLB license — a general contractor registration does not cover nonresidential roofing, and the insurance floor is four times the general contractor minimum ($500,000 vs. $2,000,000).
Pass the PSI Exam First — $400 for the Initial Two-Year License
Every applicant must pass a PSI written examination before RICRLB will process an application. The initial fee is $400 for a two-year license. Required at application:
- General Liability Insurance: $2,000,000 minimum per occurrence, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
- Workers' Compensation: required if you have employees, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
- Government-issued ID
Renew Every Two Years: $200, 12 Hours CE, $50 Late Fee
Renewal costs $200 for the next two-year cycle. A $50 late fee applies to any expired license. To renew, submit proof of completing 12 hours of state-approved continuing education since the last renewal. Both insurance certificates must remain current at renewal.
This License Covers Nonresidential Work Only
The Commercial Roofing Contractor License authorizes installation, repair, and replacement of roofing systems on commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. Residential roofing falls under the general contractor registration, not this credential.
$5,000 First Offense, $10,000 Repeat — RIGL § 5-65-19
Administrative fines for unlicensed commercial roofing reach $5,000 for a first violation and $10,000 for each subsequent violation of the same subsection. Criminal penalties under RIGL § 5-65 may also apply.
