Rhode Island Commercial Roofing Contractor License


The Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (RICRLB) issues the Commercial Roofing Contractor License, which authorizes holders to perform roofing work on nonresidential (commercial) structures in Rhode Island.


What This License Authorizes


Commercial Roofing Contractors are authorized to install, repair, and replace roofing systems on commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. This is a separate license from the general contractor registration and carries higher insurance requirements reflecting the scope of commercial roofing work.


Application Requirements


  • PSI Exam: Applicants must pass a written examination administered by PSI testing services
  • Application Fee: $400 for a 2-year license period
  • General Liability Insurance: Minimum $2,000,000 per occurrence, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
  • Government-Issued ID: Driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID
  • Business Entity Registration: Required for LLCs, corporations, and incorporated entities

  • Renewal Fee: $200

  • Continuing Education: 12 hours of state-approved continuing education required

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing commercial roofing work without a valid RICRLB license may result in administrative fines of up to $5,000 for a first offense and $10,000 for subsequent offenses, along with potential criminal penalties.
