Rhode Island Master Electrician (Electrical Contractor) License


The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT), Division of Professional Regulation, Board of Examiners of Electricians, issues the Master Electrician license, which functions as the Electrical Contractor license in Rhode Island.


What This License Authorizes


Master Electricians are authorized to plan, supervise, and perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs. This license allows the holder to operate as an electrical contractor and to pull electrical permits for work in Rhode Island.


Application Requirements


  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years of verifiable electrical experience
  • Journeyman Prerequisite: Must hold a valid Journeyman Electrician license for at least 2 years before applying
  • Examination: Must pass the Master Electrician (Contractor) examination
  • License Fee: $240

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $240
  • Continuing Education: 15 hours of Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) per renewal cycle
  • Out-of-state licensees may submit 15 hours of CE from their state if it meets Rhode Island requirements
