Rhode Island Home Inspector License
The Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (RICRLB) issues the Home Inspector License, which authorizes holders to conduct comprehensive visual examinations of residential properties and report on their condition.
What This License Authorizes
Licensed Home Inspectors may perform comprehensive visual examinations of residential properties, evaluating the condition of structural components, systems, and other aspects of the property. Inspection reports are provided to clients — typically homebuyers — as part of real estate transactions.
Application Requirements
- PSI Exam: Applicants must pass the Rhode Island Home Inspector Exam administered by PSI
- Inspection Experience: Evidence of completing 100 inspections is required
- License Fee: $200 for a 2-year license period
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $500,000 per occurrence, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
- Errors and Omissions Insurance: Minimum $500,000, naming RICRLB as certificate holder
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees
- Government-Issued ID: Driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID

- Errors and Omissions Insurance: Minimum $500,000
- Both must name RICRLB as the certificate holder
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- Renewal Fee: $200
- Late Fee: $50 for expired licenses
- Continuing Education: 12 hours of approved continuing education required per renewal cycle
Associate Home Inspector License
Rhode Island also offers an Associate Home Inspector license for those entering the profession. Associate inspectors perform inspections under the supervision of a fully licensed Home Inspector and must complete 50 inspections (instead of 100) to qualify.
