Rhode Island Journeyman Plumber License


The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT), Division of Professional Regulation, Board of Examiners of Plumbers, issues the Journeyman Plumber license for qualified plumbing tradespeople.


What This License Authorizes


Journeyman Plumbers are authorized to perform plumbing installations, alterations, and repairs. This license is the prerequisite for eventually qualifying as a Master Plumber.


Application Requirements


  • Experience: Minimum of 8,000 hours (approximately 4 years within a 5-year period) of supervised on-the-job plumbing experience
  • Classroom Training: 576 hours of state-approved training program
  • Examination: Must pass the Journeyman Plumber trade examination
  • Application Fee: $75 (non-refundable filing fee)
  • License Fee: $72

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires on licensee's birthdate)
  • Renewal Fee: $72
  • Continuing Education: 7 hours of approved continuing education per renewal cycle

Career Pathway


After holding a Journeyman Plumber license for at least 1 year and accumulating a minimum of 5 years of total plumbing experience, licensees may apply for the Master Plumber examination.


Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing plumbing work without a valid Journeyman Plumber license in Rhode Island is a violation of state law, subject to fines and potential criminal penalties.
