Rhode Island Journeyman Electrician License


The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT), Division of Professional Regulation, Board of Examiners of Electricians, issues the Journeyman Electrician license for qualified electrical workers.


What This License Authorizes


Journeyman Electricians are authorized to perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs under the supervision of or independently as an employee of a licensed Master Electrician. This license is the prerequisite for eventually qualifying as a Master Electrician (Electrical Contractor).


Application Requirements


  • Experience: Minimum of 8,000 hours (approximately 4 years) of supervised on-the-job electrical experience
  • Classroom Training: 576 hours of related instruction approved by the Department of Labor and Training
  • Examination: Must pass the Journeyman Electrician examination
  • License Fee: $72

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $72
  • Continuing Education: 15 hours of Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) per renewal cycle

Career Pathway


After holding a Journeyman Electrician license for at least 2 years and accumulating a total of 6 years of experience, licensees may apply for the Master Electrician (Electrical Contractor) examination.

Performing electrical work without a valid Journeyman Electrician license in Rhode Island is a violation of state law, subject to fines and potential criminal penalties.
