Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Oklahoma Plumbing Contractor License
The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB) requires a Plumbing Contractor license before you can contract for plumbing work anywhere in the state — residential or commercial. This is Oklahoma's master-level plumbing credential: it authorizes you to plan, superintend, and perform installation, alteration, repair, and renovation of plumbing systems, and to supervise journeymen and apprentices working under your name.
Four Years of Experience to Qualify
The CIB requires 4 years of verifiable plumbing trade experience. The standard path is 3 years working under a licensed plumbing contractor as a journeyman, plus 1 additional year at the contractor level. Education credit is available: an associate degree or career tech diploma with 1,000+ classroom hours substitutes for 2 years; a 500-hour program substitutes for 1 year.
Verifiable military plumbing service qualifies in place of civilian employment. Out-of-state licenses in good standing may substitute under reciprocity provisions (OAC 158:30-5-4). All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
Two Exams — Trade and Business and Law
Both components are administered by PSI Licensure:
- Trade portion: 85 questions, 3-hour limit, open-book
- Business and Law portion: 50 questions, 2-hour limit, open-book
Failed applicants may retest 30 days after the first failure, 90 days after any subsequent failure.
$5,000 Bond and Liability Insurance Required
Before the CIB activates your license, submit two instruments:
- Surety bond: $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board, continuous with 30 days' cancellation notice, original signatures and Power of Attorney attached.
- Liability insurance: Commercial general liability insurance with the CIB as certificate holder. Any policy change or lapse must be reported to InsuranceStaff@cib.ok.gov — a lapse makes your license inactive.
Workers' compensation coverage is required if you employ workers. A waiver affidavit is available for qualifying sole proprietors.
$330 to Apply, $200 Annual Renewal Due by Last Day of Birth Month
- Application: $330 (license and filing fees)
- Renewal: $200 annually, due by the last day of your birth month
- Continuing education: 6 hours within the preceding 36 months from CIB-approved providers, completed before license expiration
Your OK-prefix license number must appear in letters at least 2 inches high on both sides of work vehicles and on all advertising, contracts, and bids.
Contracting Without a License Is a Misdemeanor
Unlicensed plumbing contracting violates the Plumbing License Law of 1955 (59 O.S. § 1000 et seq.). The first offense carries a $500 fine; each subsequent offense costs $1,000. The CIB investigates complaints and may refer cases to the district attorney for prosecution.
