Oklahoma Residential Electrical Contractor License
The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB) issues the Residential Electrical Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to contract for electrical wiring in buildings classified as one and two family dwellings as defined in the National Electrical Code (NEC).
What This License Authorizes
Residential Electrical Contractors are limited to contracting for wiring in one and two family dwellings. This license does not authorize commercial or industrial electrical work. Residential Electrical Journeymen work under the direct supervision of a Residential Electrical Contractor.
Requirements
- Experience: Must first hold a Residential Electrical Journeyman license. Contractor applicants need verifiable experience in the residential electrical trade, including one additional year beyond journeyman requirements.
- Examination: Must pass the residential electrical trade exam and a business and law exam.
- Bond: $5,000 Corporate Surety Bond payable to the CIB.
- Insurance: Minimum $50,000 commercial general liability insurance.

- Application Fee: $300
- Renewal Period: Annually, due by the last day of your birth month
- Renewal Fee: $200
- Continuing Education: 12 hours every 3 years (36 months) -- 6 hours of code updates plus 6 hours from approved topics
- Bond and Insurance: Must maintain current bond and insurance throughout the license term
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing unlicensed electrical contracting in Oklahoma is a misdemeanor punishable by fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 and up to one year in jail. The CIB actively investigates complaints and may issue civil fines of up to $500 per violation per day.
