Oklahoma HVAC/R Unlimited Mechanical Contractor License
The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB) issues the HVAC/R Unlimited Mechanical Contractor license, which is the highest-tier mechanical license available. It authorizes the holder to install, alter, modify, service, maintain, or repair any cooling, heating, refrigeration, process piping, natural gas piping, and sheet metal systems without limitation on capacity.
What This License Authorizes
HVAC/R Unlimited Contractors may work on any cooling product, system, or equipment including process piping, all heating equipment including process piping, sheet metal, natural gas piping, and refrigeration systems of any size or capacity. There are no tonnage or BTU limitations.
Requirements
- Experience: At least 4 years of verifiable experience in the mechanical trade -- 3 years at the journeyman level plus one additional year. Approved education programs may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement.
- Examination: Must pass the HVAC/R Unlimited technical trade exam and a business and law exam.
- Bond: $5,000 Corporate Surety Bond payable to the CIB.
- Insurance: Minimum $50,000 commercial general liability insurance with the CIB as certificate holder.
Renewal Process
- Application Fee: $300
- Renewal Period: Annually, due by the last day of your birth month
- Renewal Fee: $200
- Continuing Education: 6 hours every 3 years (36 months) from CIB-approved providers
- Bond and Insurance: Must maintain current bond and insurance throughout the license term
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing unlicensed mechanical work in Oklahoma is a misdemeanor with fines of $500 for the first violation and $1,000 for subsequent offenses. The CIB may also issue civil fines of up to $500 per violation per day.
