Oklahoma Unlimited Electrical Contractor License


The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB) issues the Unlimited Electrical Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to lay out, install, maintain, repair, or replace all electrical wires, conduits, apparatus, fixtures, appliances, and equipment transmitting, carrying, controlling, or using electricity throughout the state.


What This License Authorizes


Unlimited Electrical Contractors may perform any and all electrical contract work in Oklahoma, including commercial, industrial, and residential projects. This is the highest-tier electrical contractor license available in the state. License numbers preceded by "OK" must be displayed on all vehicles, signage, advertising, contracts, and bids in letters at least 2 inches high.


Requirements


  • Experience: Must first hold an Unlimited Electrical Journeyman license, which requires 8,000 hours of on-the-job experience (4,000 hours in commercial/industrial). Contractor applicants need an additional year of experience beyond journeyman level.
  • Examination: Must pass both the technical trade exam and a business and law exam administered by the CIB.
  • Bond: $5,000 Corporate Surety Bond payable to the CIB with original signatures, seals, and Power of Attorney.
  • Insurance: Minimum $50,000 commercial general liability insurance with the CIB listed as certificate holder.

Renewal Process


  • Application Fee: $300
  • Renewal Period: Annually, due by the last day of your birth month
  • Renewal Fee: $200
  • Continuing Education: 12 hours every 3 years (36 months) -- 6 hours of code updates plus 6 hours from approved topics including circuit theory, safety, and manufacturers' equipment
  • Bond and Insurance: Must maintain current bond and insurance throughout the license term

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing unlicensed electrical contracting in Oklahoma is a misdemeanor punishable by fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 and up to one year in jail. The CIB may also issue civil fines of up to $500 per violation per day.
