Oklahoma Natural Gas Piping Contractor License
Natural gas piping work in Oklahoma requires a CIB Mechanical Contractor license in the Natural Gas Piping category — the Construction Industries Board issues no stand-alone gas-only license.
Gas Piping From Meter to Appliance: A Defined, Bounded Scope
A Natural Gas Piping Contractor may install, alter, modify, service, maintain, or repair all natural gas piping from the point of delivery to the connections with the appliances. This covers the full interior gas distribution system — from the meter to each gas-fired appliance connection. Work on heating and cooling equipment, refrigeration systems, or sheet metal is not within this license's scope; that requires an HVAC/R Unlimited or Limited Mechanical Contractor license.
Oklahoma law prohibits any person from installing, replacing, or repairing gas piping unless licensed under the Mechanical Licensing Act (59 O.S. § 1850 et seq.) or licensed as a plumbing contractor or journeyman plumber.
Four Years of Experience, Two Exams, $5,000 Bond, and Liability Insurance
To qualify for the Natural Gas Piping Contractor license:
- Experience: 4 years total verifiable experience in the mechanical trade — journeyman-equivalent qualifications (3 years) plus 1 additional year at the contractor level.
- Exam: Pass both the Natural Gas Piping technical trade exam (40 questions, 2 hours, open-book, 70% minimum, administered by PSI Licensure) and the CIB Business and Law exam.
- Bond: $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the CIB, in the individual license holder's name, continuous with 30-day cancellation notice, with original signatures, seals, and Power of Attorney.
- Insurance: Commercial general liability insurance with the CIB as certificate holder.
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees.
$330 to Apply, $200 Annual Renewal Due by Last Day of Birth Month
- Application: $330 (license and filing fees)
- Renewal: $200 annually, due by the last day of your birth month
- Continuing Education: 6 hours every 36 months from CIB-approved providers, completed before license expiration
- Display requirement: Firm name and OK license number must appear on all vehicles, advertising, contracts, and bids
Installing Gas Lines Without a License Is a Misdemeanor
Unlicensed gas piping work is a misdemeanor under the Oklahoma Mechanical Licensing Act (59 O.S. § 1850 et seq.), punishable by a fine of $200–$1,000. The Mechanical Hearing Board may also issue civil administrative fines of up to $500 per violation. The CIB investigates complaints and may refer cases to the district attorney for prosecution.
