Ohio Refrigeration Contractor License
Ohio regulates refrigeration contractors through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB). Like the other Chapter 4740 trade licenses, this is an individual contractor license that turns on experience, insurance, the state examination path, and yearly renewal compliance.
What an applicant has to show
Ohio law says an applicant for a trade-contractor license must:
- be at least 18 years old;
- be a U.S. citizen or legal resident with valid documentation;
- show at least five years as a tradesperson in the licensed trade, or qualify through one of the alternate statutory pathways; and
- maintain contractor liability insurance in the amount set by the specialty section.
The current fee rule sets the board fees at $25 for the exam application and $25 for issuance of the license after approval.
Insurance and yearly CE
Ohio's fee and insurance rule requires contractor liability insurance with completed-operations coverage of at least $500,000. The continuing-education rule then requires 10 classroom hours each year for refrigeration licensees to remain eligible to renew.
Renewal structure
- The standard renewal fee is $60 each year.
- Licensees who qualify for the compliant contractor program may use the $180 triennial renewal option instead.
- Under that program, triennial renewers show 24 hours of CE at renewal rather than filing under the normal annual track.
What happens if the filing slips
Ohio's rules do not use a fixed late-fee shortcut for this license. Instead:
- the specialty section may assess a late filing fee of up to double the usual renewal fee;
- if CE is not complete by the expiration date, the license is automatically suspended;
- the contractor can seek reactivation within one year by satisfying the renewal, insurance, and CE requirements; and
- if reactivation does not happen within that period, the rules say the license is automatically revoked.
Why this page matters
This route is often oversimplified into a three-year refrigeration license. The actual Ohio rule set is tighter than that. The default license renews annually, the ordinary renewal fee is $60, and the contractor has to keep both the 10-hour yearly CE requirement and the $500,000 liability-insurance rule in place the whole time.
