The fine print is here.

Ohio Hydronics Contractor License

Ohio regulates hydronics contractors through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB). This is an individual trade license issued under R.C. 4740.06, so the filing turns on the applicant's experience, insurance, exam path, and annual renewal status.

What the board looks for on the front end

To qualify for the examination, Ohio law says the applicant must:

  • be at least 18 years old;
  • be a U.S. citizen or legal resident with valid documentation;
  • show at least five years as a tradesperson in the licensed trade, or qualify through one of the other paths the statute allows; and
  • maintain contractor liability insurance in the amount required by the specialty section.

The current fee rule sets the state board fees at $25 for the exam application and $25 for issuance of the license after approval.

Insurance and continuing education

Ohio's fee and insurance rule requires contractor liability insurance with completed-operations coverage of at least $500,000. For hydronics and refrigeration licenses, the continuing-education rule requires 10 classroom hours each year to stay renewal-eligible.

Renewal timing

  • The usual renewal fee is $60 per year.
  • Ohio also allows a $180 triennial renewal for licensees who qualify for the compliant contractor program.
  • Under the compliant contractor rule, annual renewers still show the hours for the current year, while triennial renewers show 24 hours at renewal.

Late renewals and lapses

Ohio does not use the simple grace-period model that many contractor boards use. Instead:

  • a section may assess a late filing fee of up to double the usual renewal fee;
  • if the CE requirement is not met by the expiration date, the license is automatically suspended;
  • the contractor can seek reactivation within one year by meeting the renewal, insurance, and CE conditions; and
  • if the license is not reactivated within that one-year window, the rules say it is automatically revoked.

Why this page matters

The common mistake on Ohio trade-license pages is treating hydronics like a three-year license with a flat late fee. The official rules are stricter than that. The default license expires annually, the usual renewal fee is $60, and the annual CE and insurance rules stay active the whole time even if a contractor later qualifies for the compliant-contractor triennial option.
