Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Akron Contractor Registration
The City of Akron requires contractors to register before doing permit-based construction work in the city.
What Akron's public materials confirm
- Contractor registration renewal runs from June 1 through June 30 each year.
- Starting June 1, 2024, contractor registration moved to Akron's online Plan Review and Permits portal.
- Contractors must provide an Akron tax registration number.
- Contractors must upload a certificate of liability insurance. Akron's public FAQ says coverage must be at least $3 million, and the city must be listed as an additional insured when the work is in the right-of-way.
- Contractors with employees must provide workers' compensation coverage.
- For right-of-way work and some restoration work, Akron's public plans-and-permits materials require a $10,000 bond or a bond for the estimated cost of restoration, whichever is greater.
Fee note
Akron's public portal page and contractor registration guide describe the workflow and required documents, but the city materials reviewed for this audit did not publish a clean contractor-registration fee or late-renewal fee line. This page intentionally omits those dollar figures until Akron posts them in a public fee schedule or application screen that can be verified.
Penalties
Akron requires contractor registration before permit-based work and can enforce violations through its permit and code processes.
