Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

    Finish the CE first

    Complete the 8 required hours before you start the renewal.

    File with the board

    File through North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLBGC) and pay the $75.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Typical processing time is 45 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $10.00, with a 30-day grace period.

North Carolina Roofing Contractor License


Roofing contractors in North Carolina must be licensed through the NCLBGC when project values reach $40,000 or more. Roofing is one of the specific construction classifications recognized by the Board.


Requirements


  • Threshold: License required for projects valued at $40,000 or more
  • Examination: Must pass applicable NASCLA or Board-approved exam
  • Financial: Must meet financial stability requirements or post a surety bond
  • Business Registration: Must be registered to do business in North Carolina

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Annual (by January 1)
  • Renewal Fee: $75 per classification
  • Late Fee: $10 after December 31
  • Continuing Education: 8 hours per year
  • Maximum Renewal: $450 maximum across all classifications

Scope of Work


Licensed Roofing Contractors can:

  • Install and repair roofing systems
  • Perform waterproofing and flashing
  • Work with all roofing materials (shingle, tile, metal, membrane)
  • Pull roofing permits on qualifying projects

Classification System


Roofing falls under the NCLBGC's classification system. Contractors can hold multiple classifications (building, highway, public utilities, specialty) with each renewable separately.
