Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

    Finish the CE first

    Complete the 8 required hours before you start the renewal.

    Check the insurance certificates

    Make sure the required policies are current and match what the board or agency expects before you file.

    File with the board

    File through North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC) and pay the $200.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Leave room for processing

    Typical processing time is 30 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $25.00, with a 30-day grace period.

North Carolina Electrical Contractor License (Unlimited)


The Unlimited Electrical Contractor license is issued by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC) and allows holders to perform electrical contracting work of any value.


Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass the NCBEEC Unlimited classification exam
  • Qualified Individual: Must designate at least one person as the listed qualified individual
  • Insurance: General liability insurance required
  • Experience: Demonstrated electrical experience

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Annual (by license expiration date)
  • Renewal Fee: $200
  • Late Fee: $25 administrative fee for late submissions
  • Continuing Education: 8 hours per year

  • Application Fee: $125 (application and exam fee)

License Classifications


The NCBEEC offers 10 classifications, with the three primary levels being:

  • Limited (L): Projects up to $60,000, equipment rated at 600 volts max
  • Intermediate (I): Projects up to $150,000
  • Unlimited (U): No project value limitation

  • Install and maintain all electrical systems
  • Work on residential, commercial, and industrial projects
  • Perform high-voltage work without restriction
  • Pull electrical permits statewide
