North Carolina Refrigeration Contractor License


North Carolina requires a separate license for contractors performing refrigeration work. This license is issued by the North Carolina State Board of Refrigeration Examiners (GS 87-64), which is a distinct board from the Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors Board.


Who Must Be Licensed


  • Contractors installing, maintaining, or repairing commercial and industrial refrigeration systems
  • Both prime contractors and subcontractors performing refrigeration work

Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass the refrigeration contractor exam
  • Experience: Documented experience in refrigeration systems
  • Insurance: General liability insurance required
  • EPA Certification: EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling

Penalties for Non-Compliance


Performing refrigeration work without a license is a Class 2 misdemeanor. The Board may seek injunctive relief and pursue civil or criminal action.
