North Carolina Low Voltage Contractor License (SP-FA/LV)

North Carolina handles this route through the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC). The license is the special restricted fire alarm/low-voltage classification, commonly written as SP-FA/LV in the Board's materials.

What the license covers

NCBEEC Rule .0804 says the classification covers low-voltage wiring and directly related wiring for systems such as:

  • fire alarm and detection systems;
  • burglar alarm systems;
  • low-voltage wiring systems operating within the limits described in the rule; and
  • directly related wiring that starts on the load side of a disconnect or junction box installed by others for that low-voltage system.

The same rule also explains that not every low-voltage job needs this license. Rule .0805 carves out certain exempt low-voltage systems, so contractors should check whether the work is inside or outside the Board's definition before they bid it.

How the filing works

  • The business applies for the license in the company name.
  • The company must list at least one qualified individual for the classification.
  • The qualifying applicant takes the NCBEEC examination for the classification.
  • The Board's exam handbook sets the application and exam fee at $125 for qualifying examinations.

Renewal and continuing education

  • Special restricted licenses renew annually.
  • The annual license fee for the special restricted classifications, including SP-FA/LV, is $100.
  • Renewal applications and fees are due 30 days before the expiration date.
  • If the Board receives the renewal after expiration, it adds a $25 administrative fee.
  • SP-FA/LV qualified individuals must complete 4 hours of approved continuing education for each annual renewal period.
  • The Board also says at least one-half of the required annual CE hours must be earned through in-person classroom or seminar attendance.

Practical filing notes

NCBEEC's FAQ says you can renew by mail or online through the Board's license account system. If the license has been expired for more than 12 months, the company moves out of the ordinary renewal track and has to satisfy the Board's renewal-after-expiration rules instead.

Why this page matters

Many contractors describe this route loosely as a low-voltage or fire alarm license, but NCBEEC regulates it as a specific special restricted electrical contracting classification. That matters because the Board's scope language, annual fee, CE rule, and renewal mechanics are tied to the classification itself, not to a generic alarm-or-security label.
