North Carolina Heating Contractor License (H1 - Unlimited)
The H1 Heating Contractor license is the highest-tier HVAC license issued by the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors. It covers all heating and cooling work without limitation.
Requirements
- Examination: Must pass the H1 Heating Contractor exam
- Experience: Documented HVAC experience
- Insurance: General liability insurance required
- EPA Certification: Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Annual (expires December 31)
- Renewal Fee: $130
- Late Fee: $25 processing fee after January 31
- Continuing Education: No mandatory CE (eliminated 2012)
- Application Fee: $100
License Groups
Heating and Cooling licenses are categorized into three groups:
- H1: Unlimited scope - all heating and cooling systems
- H2: Intermediate scope
- H3: Limited/residential scope
Scope of Work
H1 Contractors can:
- Install and repair all HVAC systems
- Work on commercial and residential projects without limitation
- Handle refrigerants (with EPA certification)
- Install ductwork and ventilation systems
- Perform system design and load calculations
Refrigeration Contractors
A separate Refrigeration Contractor license (separate board) is available for those specializing in refrigeration systems.
