Newark Contractor Registration


The City of Newark requires building contractors to obtain a city license to perform construction work requiring building permits within city limits, in addition to the state NJ HIC registration.


Requirements


  • State Registration: Must hold a valid NJ Home Improvement Contractor registration
  • Insurance: General liability insurance required
  • Zoning Approval: Required for business license
  • Fire Certificate: Required for business license
  • Application Fee: $200 processing fee

Scope of Work


Licensed contractors can construct, erect, alter, repair, restore, re-roof, re-side, move, or demolish buildings or structures requiring city permits within Newark.

Newark's city contractor license is required in addition to the state NJ Home Improvement Contractor registration through the Division of Consumer Affairs. Both are needed to work in Newark.
