Detailed notes

New Jersey Fire Protection Contractor License

The New Jersey Division of Fire Safety (DCA) certifies fire protection equipment contractors under N.J.A.C. 5:74 (Standard for the Certification of Fire Protection Equipment Contractors). Two credentials are required — a business permit for the firm and individual certificates of certification for each qualified technician — both renewed on a three-year cycle.

Six contractor classifications

Before applying, confirm which classification covers your work:

  • All Fire Protection Equipment — NICET Level II in Fire Alarm Systems, Inspection/Testing of Water-based Systems, and Special Hazard Suppression
  • Fire Sprinkler System — NICET Level II in Inspection and Testing of Water-based Systems
  • Special Hazard Fire Suppression — NICET Level II in Special Hazard Suppression Systems
  • Fire Alarm System — NICET Level II in Fire Alarm Systems
  • Portable Fire Extinguisher — NAFED certification
  • Kitchen Fire Suppression System — NAFED certification

Fees (N.J.A.C. 5:74-2.10)

  • Business permit: $250 initial, $250 three-year renewal
  • Individual certificate: $75 initial, $75 three-year renewal
  • Amended permit / amended certificate: $50 / $25

Continuing professional development

Each certificate holder must earn 90 CPD points per three-year renewal cycle in their classification (N.J.A.C. 5:74-2.4(b)). NICET administers CPD for the four NICET-based classifications; NAFED sets requirements for the portable extinguisher and kitchen suppression tracks.
