New Jersey Fire Protection Contractor License
The New Jersey Division of Fire Safety licenses fire protection contractors who install, inspect, and maintain fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems. A valid business permit is required under the Uniform Fire Code (N.J.A.C. 5:74).
Requirements
- NICET Certification: NICET certification required for applicable systems
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
- Application Fee: $250 (business permit)
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 3 years
- Renewal Fee: $250 (business permit)
- Professional Development: 90 NICET Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points per 3-year cycle
- Late Penalty: $500 additional fee (2x renewal)
Individual Certifications
In addition to the business permit, individual technicians must obtain certifications ($75 each, 3-year renewal) through the Division of Fire Safety.
Scope of Work
Licensed fire protection contractors may design, install, inspect, test, and maintain fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and related fire protection equipment throughout New Jersey.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Installing or maintaining fire protection systems without a valid license is subject to fines, stop-work orders, and potential criminal prosecution under the Uniform Fire Code.
