New Jersey Electrical Contractor License


The New Jersey Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors regulates all electrical contractors in the state. A state license is required to perform electrical work in New Jersey, including both residential and commercial installations.


Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass the NJ electrical contractor exam
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of documented electrical experience
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
  • Continuing Education: 34 hours per triennial renewal cycle
  • Application Fee: $100 (non-refundable)

Scope of Work


Licensed electrical contractors may install, alter, repair, and maintain electrical wiring, equipment, and systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings throughout New Jersey.


Penalties for Non-Compliance


Performing electrical work without a valid license is subject to fines up to $10,000 per offense, stop-work orders, and potential criminal prosecution.
