New Hampshire Oil Heating Technician Certification

The New Hampshire Mechanical Safety and Licensing Board, under the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), issues the voluntary Oil Heating Technician Certification. This is not a mandatory license — oil heating work is not regulated by mandatory licensure in New Hampshire — but the certification documents professional competency in the installation, service, and maintenance of oil-fired heating equipment.

Important: This Certification Is Voluntary

New Hampshire does not require a state license to perform oil heating technician work. This OPLC certification is voluntary and serves as a credential demonstrating verified competency. Some employers, insurance carriers, or clients may require or prefer certified technicians.

What This Certification Covers

Oil Heating Technicians work on oil-fired furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and other oil-fired heating equipment. Certified technicians have demonstrated knowledge of oil burner systems, combustion analysis, safety controls, and industry standards.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must hold one of the following national certifications:

  • NORA Gold or Silver Certification (National Oilheat Research Alliance)
  • NATE certification modules relevant to oil heating systems (North American Technician Excellence)

Applicants must also provide employer documentation of at least 4,000 hours of field experience in oil heating work.

Fees

Contact the NH OPLC Mechanical Safety and Licensing Board directly for the current fee schedule. Fees are set by board rule and subject to periodic revision: https://www.oplc.nh.gov/mechanical-safety-and-licensing-board

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Process: Submit renewal application online through OPLC's renewal portal with current national certification documentation
