New Hampshire Journeyman Electrician License

The New Hampshire Electricians' Board, under the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), issues the Journeyman Electrician license. This license authorizes the holder to perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs under the general supervision of a Master Electrician.

What This License Authorizes

Journeyman Electricians may independently perform electrical installations, maintenance, and repairs. However, they must work under the general supervision of a licensed Master Electrician. Journeymen may not own or operate their own electrical contracting business — that requires a Master license.

Examination and Experience Requirements

Applicants must complete at least 8,000 hours (approximately 4 years) of apprenticeship training under a licensed electrician and pass the Journeyman Electrician examination. The exam covers the National Electrical Code (NEC) and New Hampshire electrical laws.

Fees

  • Application Fee: $50
  • License Issuance Fee: $150 (paid upon approval)
  • Renewal Fee: $150 (every 3 years)
  • Late Renewal Fee: $50 (after 30-day grace period)
  • Exam Fee: $90

Continuing Education

Journeyman Electricians must complete 15 hours of continuing education relating to the current National Electrical Code within the 3-year license cycle. At least 1 hour must cover changes to RSA 319-C and administrative rules. Failure to complete CE by the December 31 deadline in the year a new NEC is adopted renders the license invalid.

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 3 years
  • Renewal Fee: $150
  • Grace Period: 30 days after expiration without additional penalty
  • Late Fee: $50 after the grace period
  • Lapsed Over 1 Year: Must retake the licensing examination

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work without a valid license violates RSA 319-C. Penalties include fines, cease-and-desist orders, and criminal misdemeanor charges.
