Detailed notes

New Hampshire Master Electrician License

The New Hampshire Electricians' Board, under the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), issues the Master Electrician license. This license authorizes the holder to plan, layout, and supervise the installation, alteration, and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment.

Important: New Hampshire Does Not License General Contractors at the State Level

New Hampshire does not issue a state-level general contractor license. Specialty trades — including electrical, plumbing, and gas fitting — are licensed at the state level through the OPLC. General contracting requirements are handled at the municipal level.

What This License Authorizes

Master Electricians may perform or supervise all types of electrical installations, alterations, and repairs. They may also employ and supervise journeyman electricians and apprentices. A Master Electrician license is required to own or operate an electrical contracting business in New Hampshire.

Examination Requirements

Applicants must pass the Master Electrician examination, which covers the National Electrical Code (NEC), New Hampshire electrical laws (RSA 319-C), and practical electrical knowledge. Candidates must have at least 2 years of experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician.

Fees

  • Application Fee: $50
  • License Issuance Fee: $270 (paid upon approval)
  • Renewal Fee: $270 (every 3 years)
  • Late Renewal Fee: $50 (after 30-day grace period)
  • Exam Fee: $90

Continuing Education

Master Electricians must complete 15 hours of continuing education relating to the current National Electrical Code within the 3-year license cycle. At least 1 hour must cover changes to RSA 319-C and administrative rules. CE must be completed by December 31 when a new NEC edition is adopted — failure to complete CE by the deadline renders the license invalid.

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 3 years
  • Renewal Fee: $270
  • Grace Period: 30 days after expiration without additional penalty
  • Late Fee: $50 after the 30-day grace period
  • Lapsed Over 1 Year: Must retake the licensing examination

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work without a valid license violates RSA 319-C. Penalties include fines, cease-and-desist orders, and criminal misdemeanor charges. The Board may also pursue disciplinary actions including license suspension or revocation.
