New Hampshire Master Plumber License

The New Hampshire Mechanical Safety and Licensing Board, under the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), issues the Master Plumber license. This license authorizes the holder to own and operate a plumbing business, train apprentices, supervise journeyman plumbers, and perform all types of plumbing installations.

What This License Authorizes

Master Plumbers may perform, supervise, and take responsibility for all plumbing installations, alterations, and repairs. They may own and operate a plumbing contracting business, employ and train apprentices, and supervise journeyman plumbers.

Examination and Experience Requirements

Applicants must have worked as a licensed Journeyman Plumber for a minimum of 6 months before applying for the Master Plumber examination. The exam covers plumbing codes, New Hampshire plumbing laws, and practical plumbing knowledge.

Fees

  • Application Fee: $310
  • Renewal Fee: $300 (every 2 years)
  • Late Fee: $25 per month after 30-day grace period
  • Reinstatement Fee: $350 (if expired over 1 year)

Continuing Education

Master Plumbers must complete 6 hours of continuing education per 2-year renewal cycle (3 hours of code update per year). Proof of CE is required at renewal. Each annual course must be different — the same 3-hour course cannot be taken twice for credit.

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires last day of birth month)
  • Renewal Fee: $300
  • Grace Period: 30 days from expiration before late fees apply
  • Late Fee: $25 per month after the grace period
  • Lapsed Over 1 Year: Must retake examination and complete 2 code update courses; $350 reinstatement fee

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing plumbing work without a valid license violates RSA 329-A. Penalties include fines, cease-and-desist orders, and potential criminal charges. Unlicensed plumbing work poses serious public health risks and may result in enforcement action by the Board.
