New Hampshire Elevator Mechanic License
The New Hampshire Department of Labor issues the Elevator Mechanic license under RSA 157-B and Lab 1300 administrative rules. This license is required to perform installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair work on elevators and accessibility lifts in New Hampshire.
What This License Authorizes
Licensed Elevator Mechanics may install, maintain, alter, and repair elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks, and accessibility lifts in New Hampshire. The same application form covers elevator mechanics, elevator inspectors, accessibility lift mechanics, and accessibility lift inspectors.
Experience Requirements
Applicants may qualify through one of two paths:
1. New Hampshire apprentice path: 2 years of documented experience as an elevator mechanic's helper/apprentice with an average of 1,800 hours per year, working in New Hampshire directly under a licensed NH elevator mechanic.
2. Out-of-state experience path: 3 consecutive years holding a certificate or license of competency working as an elevator mechanic with an average of 1,800 hours per year.
Examination
All applicants must pass the elevator mechanic examination administered by the NH Department of Labor. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass.

- Renewal Fee: $35 (every 2 years)

Applications are submitted by mail to: New Hampshire Department of Labor, PO Box 2076, Concord, NH 03302-2076.

- Form: Use the Elevator License Application form (May 2025 version) for both initial applications and renewals
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing elevator mechanic work without a valid license violates RSA 157-B. Penalties include fines, stop-work orders, and potential criminal charges. The NH Department of Labor actively enforces elevator safety laws.
