Nebraska Residential Journeyman Wireman License
The Nebraska State Electrical Division issues the Residential Journeyman Wireman license for electricians who perform electrical work exclusively on residential installations. This is a more limited scope license than the standard Journeyman Electrician.
What This License Authorizes
Residential Journeyman Wiremen may wire or install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for residential installations only. Work is restricted to single-family or two-family dwellings, or multi-family dwellings not larger than three stories in height. The license holder may also supervise apprentice electricians on residential jobs.
Qualification Requirements
- At least three years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade, acceptable to the Board
- Apprentice registration counts toward this requirement
- One year of credit may be granted for completing an approved two-year post-secondary electrical program
- Must pass the Residential Journeyman Wireman examination
Fees
- Exam Fee: $60
- License Fee: $25 per year of the two-year license period ($50 total for biennial renewal)
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years)
- Renewal Fee: $50 (biennial)
- Continuing Education: 12 hours required, with at least 6 hours on the National Electrical Code
Late Renewal
Expired license holders have a three-month grace period. During this window, renewal requires the license fee plus 10% of the renewal fee for each month past expiration. After three months, the license holder must retake the examination.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid license is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
