Nebraska Electrical Contractor License


The Nebraska State Electrical Division issues the Electrical Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to bid, plan, lay out, install, and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment in the state of Nebraska.


What This License Authorizes


Electrical Contractors may perform or supervise all types of electrical installation work throughout the state, including commercial, industrial, and residential projects. The license holder is responsible for ensuring all work meets the National Electrical Code as adopted by the State Electrical Board.


Qualification Requirements


Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be a graduate of a four-year electrical engineering course from an accredited college or university with at least one year of experience as a licensed journeyman electrician, OR
  • Have at least one year of experience as a licensed journeyman electrician

Applicants must pass the Electrical Contractor examination. The exam fee is $125.


Bond and Insurance Requirements


  • Surety Bond: $10,000 minimum bond required
  • General Liability Insurance: $500,000 minimum coverage required
  • Workers' Compensation: Required by Nebraska state law for all employers

  • License Fee: $125 per year of the two-year license period ($250 total for biennial renewal)

Reciprocal Licensing


Nebraska offers reciprocal licensing agreements for electrical contractors with Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Texas.


Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $250 (biennial)
  • Continuing Education: 12 hours required, with at least 6 hours on the National Electrical Code

Late Renewal


Expired license holders have a three-month grace period. During this window, renewal requires payment of the license fee plus 10% of the renewal fee for each month (or portion thereof) past expiration. After three months, the license holder must retake the examination to obtain a new license.


Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing electrical work in Nebraska without a valid license is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
