Nebraska Journeyman Electrician License

The Nebraska State Electrical Division issues the Journeyman Electrician license, which authorizes the holder to install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment throughout the state of Nebraska and to supervise apprentice electricians.

What This License Authorizes

Journeyman Electricians may perform all types of electrical installation work — commercial, industrial, and residential — throughout the state. They may also supervise registered apprentice electricians on the job.

Qualification Requirements

  • At least four years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade, acceptable to the Board
  • Apprentice registration counts toward this requirement
  • One year of credit may be granted for completion of a two-year accredited electrical technology associate degree
  • Military electrical experience may qualify for credit
  • Must pass the Journeyman Electrician examination

Fees

  • Exam Fee: $60
  • License Fee: $25 per year of the two-year license period ($50 total for biennial renewal)

Restricted License Note

Applicants with fewer than 4,000 hours in Nebraska or 8,000 total hours without four years of apprentice registration receive a "Restricted" license that does not qualify for reciprocal licensing with other states.

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $50 (biennial)
  • Continuing Education: 12 hours required, with at least 6 hours on the National Electrical Code

Late Renewal

Expired license holders have a three-month grace period. During this window, renewal requires the license fee plus 10% of the renewal fee for each month past expiration. After three months, the license holder must retake the examination.

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work without a valid license is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
