Nebraska Class B Journeyman Electrician License

No new Class B Journeyman Electrician licenses have been issued in Nebraska since September 9, 1993. Under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 81-2117.02, this license type is grandfathered — only holders of pre-existing Class B Journeyman licenses may renew. New electricians entering the trade must obtain the standard Journeyman Electrician license at electrical.nebraska.gov/journeyman-electrician.

Authorized Scope

A Class B Journeyman Electrician license authorizes electrical wiring, installation, and supervision of apprentices within a restricted residential scope: systems of not more than 400-ampere capacity in structures used as residential dwellings of no more than four family units, located in municipalities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants (by the most recent federal census). Work outside this scope requires the standard Journeyman Electrician license.

Renewal Requirements

Class B Journeyman licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years. Renewals are submitted online at electrical.nebraska.gov/license-renewal.

  • Renewal fee: $75 biennial ($37.50/year)
  • Continuing education: 12 hours required per renewal period, including at least 6 hours on the National Electrical Code

Late Renewal

Expired licenses may be renewed within three months of expiration by paying the renewal fee plus $7.50 per month (10% of the $75 biennial renewal fee, or portion thereof overdue). Beyond three months, a new application is required — but under § 81-2117.02, the Class B Journeyman license cannot be reissued after September 9, 1993. A holder whose license lapses beyond the 90-day grace window cannot obtain a new Class B Journeyman license.

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work without a valid license is a Class I misdemeanor under § 81-2143 — up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
