Nebraska Class B Electrical Contractor License

No new Class B Electrical Contractor licenses have been issued in Nebraska since September 9, 1993. Under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 81-2117.02, this license type is grandfathered — only holders of pre-existing Class B licenses may renew. Contractors starting a new electrical contracting business must obtain the standard Electrical Contractor license at electrical.nebraska.gov/electrical-contractor.

Authorized Scope

A Class B Electrical Contractor license authorizes planning, laying out, installing, and supervising electrical work within a strict residential scope: systems of not more than 400-ampere capacity in structures used as residential dwellings of no more than four family units, located in municipalities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants (by the most recent federal census). Commercial, industrial, and large residential projects fall outside this scope and require the standard Electrical Contractor license.

Renewal Requirements

Class B Electrical Contractor licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years. Renewals are submitted online at electrical.nebraska.gov/license-renewal.

  • Renewal fee: $375 biennial ($187.50/year)
  • Continuing education: 12 hours required per renewal period, including at least 6 hours on the National Electrical Code

Insurance Requirements

Holders actively operating an electrical contracting firm must maintain general liability insurance at minimum limits set by State Electrical Board Rule 7: $100,000 per person, $300,000 each accident, and $100,000 property damage (Board Rule 7).

Late Renewal

Expired licenses may be renewed within three months of expiration by paying the renewal fee plus $37.50 per month (10% of the $375 biennial renewal fee, or portion thereof overdue). Beyond three months, a new application is required — but under § 81-2117.02, no new Class B Electrical Contractor licenses can be issued. A holder whose license lapses beyond the 90-day grace window cannot obtain a new Class B license.

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work without a valid license is a Class I misdemeanor under § 81-2143 — up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
