Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Nebraska Class B Electrical Contractor License

The Nebraska State Electrical Division issues the Class B Electrical Contractor license for contractors performing electrical work within a more limited scope than the standard Electrical Contractor license. This classification is appropriate for smaller electrical contracting businesses.

What This License Authorizes

Class B Electrical Contractors may bid, plan, lay out, install, and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment within the scope defined by the State Electrical Board for Class B operations.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet qualification criteria similar to the standard Electrical Contractor, including experience as a licensed journeyman electrician and passing the Class B Electrical Contractor examination.

Bond and Insurance Requirements

  • Surety Bond: $10,000 minimum bond required
  • General Liability Insurance: $500,000 minimum coverage required
  • Workers' Compensation: Required by Nebraska state law for all employers

Fees

  • Exam Fee: $125
  • License Fee: $125 per year of the two-year license period ($250 total for biennial renewal)

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $250 (biennial)
  • Continuing Education: 12 hours required, with at least 6 hours on the National Electrical Code

Late Renewal

Expired license holders have a three-month grace period. During this window, renewal requires the license fee plus 10% of the renewal fee for each month past expiration. After three months, the license holder must retake the examination.

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work in Nebraska without a valid license is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
