Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Nebraska Apprentice Electrician Registration
Nebraska apprentice electricians must register with the State Electrical Division before performing any electrical work — working without a valid registration is a Class I misdemeanor under § 81-2143.
What the Registration Authorizes
Registered apprentices may perform electrical work under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman electrician or electrical contractor. Hours logged as a registered apprentice count toward the four years of experience required for a Journeyman Electrician license.
No Exam or Experience Required
There are no prerequisites — no experience, no exam, and no education requirements. Submit the registration form to the State Electrical Division at electrical.nebraska.gov and pay the fee to begin.
Fees
- New registration (even-numbered year): $35
- New registration (odd-numbered year): $70
- Biennial renewal: $70 (covers the full two-year period to December 31 of the next even-numbered year)
Continuing Education — Optional but Consequential
CE is not required to renew an apprentice registration. However, under Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 81-2113 and 81-2117.01, apprentices who do not complete 12 hours of Board-approved CE by January 1 of each odd-numbered year may be assessed up to six additional months of required experience before qualifying for the journeyman examination.
Late Renewal
All registrations expire December 31 of even-numbered years. Expired registrations may be renewed within three months of expiration by paying the renewal fee plus $7 per month (10% of the $70 biennial renewal fee, or portion thereof) past the expiration date. Beyond three months, a new registration application is required per § 81-2118.
Consequences of Working Unregistered
Working in the electrical trade without a valid registration is a Class I misdemeanor under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 81-2143 — up to one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
