The fine print is here.
Kansas LP Gas Installer License (Class 8)
Kansas handles propane install-and-service work through the State Fire Marshal's Class 8 license. The filing is narrower than a general plumbing or HVAC credential: it is specifically for installing, maintaining, or modifying a residential or commercial liquefied petroleum gas distribution and utilization system.
What has to be in the initial file
The Kansas propane rules say each applicant has to submit the Class 8 application, proof that the required training has been completed, and proof of continuous general liability insurance coverage of at least $1,000,000. The current Class 8 application form also points companies back to the propane statutes and rules and requires them to confirm that employees are trained to current NFPA 58 standards.
For Class 8, the approved initial training is the Basic Principles and Practices course plus one of these three tracks:
- Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems
- Designing and Installing Exterior Vapor Distribution Systems
- Systems Testing Training
Annual renewal and the refresher rule
Kansas law makes Class 8 a license that renews on an annual basis. The propane rules say the license expires on September 30 each year, and renewal materials are due to the State Fire Marshal on or before July 15 with proof that the continuing-training requirement has been met and proof of the same $1 million liability coverage.
The continuing-training rule is not annual classroom hours. Instead, the licensee has to show that the person who completed the initial Class 8 training has either taken the corresponding refresher course or been replaced by another employee who completed the required initial training at least every three years.
Fee and supervision points that matter
Kansas statute caps the annual Class 8 fee at $25 per individual, and the current application form uses the same license class for companies whose technicians work under a master plumber block certification structure. That is why crews should sort out who holds the qualifying credential before the renewal packet is due.
