Kansas Elevator Mechanic License

The Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM) issues elevator mechanic licenses under the Kansas Elevator Safety Act (K.S.A. 44-1801 et seq.). Violations of the Kansas Elevator Safety Act, including performing elevator work without a valid KSFM license, carry civil penalties of up to $1,000 per violation under K.S.A. 44-1811.

Mechanics Must Work Under a Licensed Elevator Contractor

A KSFM elevator mechanic license authorizes the holder to erect, construct, install, alter, inspect, service, repair, or maintain elevators and escalators in Kansas, per K.S.A. 44-1802(g). Licensed mechanics must work under the direct supervision of an elevator contractor — this supervision requirement is built into the statutory definition at K.S.A. 44-1802(g); contractor licensure is governed separately under K.S.A. 44-1806.

Application: $150 Fee, Two-Year Renewal Cycle

The application fee is $150. Submit Form 630 through the KSFM Elevator Safety Program at firemarshal.ks.gov/342/Elevator-Safety-Program. Licenses are valid for two years; the renewal fee shall not exceed $150 per K.S.A. 44-1807. No continuing education is required for renewal under the KSFM Elevator Safety Program or K.S.A. 44-1807.

Unlicensed Mechanic Work Carries Up to $1,000 Per-Violation Civil Penalty

Performing elevator mechanic work in Kansas without a valid KSFM license violates the Kansas Elevator Safety Act. Violations of the Kansas Elevator Safety Act carry civil penalties of up to $1,000 per violation under K.S.A. 44-1811.
