Kansas Elevator Contractor License
The Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM) issues elevator contractor licenses under the Kansas Elevator Safety Act. Any individual, firm, partnership, corporation, association, or other entity engaging in the business of installing, altering, inspecting, servicing, replacing, or maintaining elevators in Kansas must hold this license.
What This License Authorizes
An elevator contractor license authorizes the holder to install, alter, service, replace, and maintain elevators, escalators, and related conveyance equipment throughout the state of Kansas. Licensed contractors must employ one or more licensed elevator mechanics to perform the work.
Insurance Requirements
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $1,000,000 for injury or death of persons
- Property Damage Insurance: Minimum $500,000
- Workers' Compensation: Required by Kansas state law
Application Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate that the business employs one or more licensed elevator mechanics. Proof of insurance meeting the minimum coverage thresholds must be provided with the application.
Fees
- Application Fee: $500
- Biennial Renewal Fee: $500 (shall not exceed initial application fee)
- Installation/Alteration Permit: $400 per permit
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- No Continuing Education Required: Maintain current insurance and licensed mechanics on staff.
Local Jurisdiction Exceptions
If a city or county has an elevator program approved by the KSFM (such as the City of Wichita), contractors working exclusively within that jurisdiction may be licensed locally instead of at the state level.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
The State Fire Marshal may impose civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day on persons or entities that violate the Elevator Safety Act. Operating an elevator without a valid Certificate of Operation may result in misdemeanor criminal charges.
